If names such as Edward Steichen, Irving Penn, Richard Avedon, Helmut Newton and David Bailey, and Steven Meisel don’t mean anything to you then open up a Vogue, Vanity Fair or Conde Nast magazine. The photography you see today was inspired by these superb artists and their works will be on display this coming September 2012 through January 6, 2013 at The McManus: Dundee Art Gallery and Museum in the U.K.
The exhibit, entitled “’Selling Dreams: One Hundred Years of Fashion Photography’ is the second in a series of exhibitions and “…brings together diverse works by more than twenty leading image-makers and will include some wonderful iconic images as well as rarely exhibited photographs…” says Susanna Brown, curator.
The exhibition includes approximately sixty works by these fashion photographers, as well as original magazine spreads from publications such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar.
Modern fashion photography as we know it today was literally created by the likes of these artists who took fashion to a level that was “art” versus simply display. Some of these photographers such as Edward Steichen pioneered a movement that utilized light, shadows and unique props to create the iconic images displayed.Selling Dreams is the first touring exhibition from the Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A) Collection to explore the work of international fashion photographers and to draw together such a broad range of important historic and contemporary fashion images, according to the Royal West of England Academy.
Philip Long, Director of V&A at Dundee, said, “The style and glamour of fashion has attracted `Selling Dreams’ is a fabulous opportunity to see some of these most iconic images, as well as discover lesser known ones from the V&A’s superlative collections.”
The V&A is home to the UK’s National Collection of the Art of Photography. ‘Selling Dreams’ is drawn from this collection and is the first V&A touring exhibition to explore the work of international fashion photographers from the earliest years of the twentieth century to the present day. It will include approximately 60 photographs.
